I love this place, the best Philly Cheesesteaks around in Orange County! My favorite would have to be a #3 with extra mushroom and cheese. I have been coming here for years, usually after a nice walk around the swapmeet. xoxo Amy Nguyen

Exactly A-OK. They really do need to hire better peeps that interact with the customers. I get better service from the cooks than the actual cashiers. Decent Philly sandwiches, and large servings of side orders.

John's is just plain good! I've been coming here with my Dad for around 10 years now. They have served me nothing but delicious sandwiches time after time. As soon as you walk in you get a very family oriented vibe. There are sport themed decorations covering all of the walls. They also have multiple TV's. Even though I'm not a sports fan I have always found their interior attractive and welcoming. They have plenty of seating as well. My favorite item on the menu is the cheese steak (with extra cheese) The bread is always perfectly soft and easy to bite and the meat is always fresh and tender. One of the reasons I praise this place so much is because they're food is always consistent. Often times restaurants will serve dishes that are hit or miss, sometimes the food is spot on and sometimes it's all off. Not this place. My food is always perfect. They also have a large drink selection! John's is perfect for a bite with the guys or a family meal. Like I said earlier, I have been coming here since I was a wee little girl. They are one of the few places that I swear by.

Great service. Good interior decor. Delicious sandwiches. The cook was very friendly and good about answering our questions. We tried the Works, the John's Special, and the Italian Hoagie. Personally, I think the Works is a commendable sandwich, whereas the others were pretty standard but tasty. The works has a great proportion of cheese steak to pepper chunks, bits of mushrooms & onions. It's made to order very quick, and comes steaming hot, ready to go. The baguettes are of a fair size. If you order a large, I think that's 10 inches. But, it'll surely fill you. The Philly Fries are great too with a nice seasoning. They compliment the sandwiches well!

If you're looking for a good cheesesteak, John's has them. Fresh baked bread, great meat, and a crap load of cheese combine for an excellent cheesesteak. For a whole one you could easily make 2 meals out of it. My favorite is the works. It comes with peppers, onion, shrooms, cheese, and a glorious amount of steak. Note: The cheesesteaks come piping hot. I mean burn your mouth hot. Wait a minute or two with the cheesesteak wide open and your patience will be rewarded.

Delicious. A big, succulent, sandwich of a philly beef and cheese oozing into yo mouth is what you want, then this is your kaboodle. I try not to go too much or I'm gonna become a fat pig. Try it you'll like it.

My husband said he heard good reviews here. He got the mushrooms and steak large sandwich for $10. He is enjoying it. He wished it came with fries for the price. I got a round style roast beef and cheese got $4. It was fine. I also got a soft baked pretzel which I loved. So that made the trip for me. The place also sells beer and wine. The have a couple of tvs and it is a sandwich style shop.

Why not 5 stars? Only because of the roll/bread. And I'm sure any east eater like John understands. However, if you were not raided east coast and all you know is anything but, this is an outstanding sandwich. The taste and ingredients are on point. For me, an east coaster, where hoagies come from; the immediate bite, the role/bread; I'm used to not being used to; after that, way to go bro! Now where come from, the tomatoes are thinner but I guess like john, I prefer them this way. Besides the roll/bread, everything else is on point. Better then the other "Philly" places, hands down! I'll be back, again, and again, and again with friends. Thank you John for bringing this 3k miles...

Best Philly cheese steak ever. I've been going here for years and the food is so delicious! They have many options to choose from and they are very accommodating with your order. They also have amazing sauces!! Writing this makes me want to go there right now. You must try this place!!!

  • Gregory W.

Best Philly cheesesteak I've ever had! Packed with meat, cheese, onions, hot and sweet peppers. Their bread and hoagie sauce is also amazing. Try the Turkey hoagie - I promise you won't be disappointed. I'm not sure where they get thair bread , but it's awesome. Crusty and delicious! If you're in the area (even if you're not in the area!) Give them a try!

  • Mary B.

The Philly cheesesteak was seasoned perfectly. The size was good for the price. My only feedback is the bread got soggy and my sandwich fell apart. I ended up eating it with a fork. I didn't mind because I really didn't want the added calories anyways but I can see how that would be disappointing

Finally found my spot for good Philly Cheesesteak's. And believe you me I've been searching for the longest. This place has the best Cheesesteak I've ever tasted by far. Forget Philly's Best or All these other imposters with their tiny flavorless portions, this place is legit! Sandwiches are BIG and will fill you up nice. I go with the Whole size #4 aka The Works with no hot peppers and extra cheese...dude, Bomb Son!! Their Philly fries are huge too and they give you an s load. They have several locations around OC but the one I go to is the one off Edinger and Goldenwest, closer to my work. Only one thing they can do to improve and that is to Open a location near Norwalk Ca, preferably next door to my house! Peace my brethrens...

  • Jay K.

Awesome sandwiches and fries. Must try the pepper plant chunky garlic sauce on both sandwich and fries. Everything served fresh and hot..

  • Leah S.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Giant Philly!! I got the half and I am stuffed. "The Works" Mushrooms, Bell peppers, onions and just the right amount of hot pepper spice. Melted cheese and a whole lot of steak!! The Best Bread EVER. Thank you John

Hands down the best Philly Cheesesteak in Orange County! I'm still searching, but I haven't found one better yet. Philly's Best, Jersey Mike's, Charley's Grilled Subs, Steak Escape, Cortina's, various sports bars, some of them have been good, but none of them have come close! The Works - I get this every time! Toasted bun packed full with fresh cut, fresh grilled top round meat. The meat is cooked until it has a little crispness on the edges, chopped and mixed with grilled mushrooms, onions, green peppers, hot peppers and cheese. What makes it better? The bread doesn't get soggy quickly like some other places (you can get it to go and it won't be a wet mess by the time you get back home or back to the office). They don't skimp on any of the ingredients and there's so much meat in every bite. There's the right amount of cheese to keep the sandwich from becoming too dry. It's unrivaled greatness, like Dr. J, a basketball, air, and a 10 foot rim, the flavors of everything just meshes perfectly like a dunk through the net. Philly Fries - A full order for $2.99 gets you a brown paper bag that's half packed with steak fries. Golden crispy on the outside, tender and piping hot potato on the inside, cooked just how I like them. Sometimes they over salt them, so if you're concerned about that, ask for unsalted ones and then you can season them as you like. There's enough fries for two people. Before they used to allow you to do a half order of fries, but I didn't see it on their new menu, so you'll have to ask about that. Service has always been friendly. Sometimes it takes them a few minutes to make your sandwich, but that's because they make them after you order, they don't do any pre-grilling. If you don't want to wait, you can call in your order (big or small) and then show up later to pick it up. There are two TVs set to different channels and the restaurant is decorated with all sorts of Philly sports memorabilia. Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Donovan McNabb, Allen Iverson, they are all here. True to Philly, you can also get Tastykakes here! ***If you look closely by the cashier, you'll see a pic of Philly native Kobe Bryant stopping in for some cheesesteaks!***

Must Order: the Original Cheesesteak or John's Special Cheesesteak Sometimes you just want some beef and cheese in your mouth. Good cheesesteaks can be hard to come by west of Philly and my hubby and I are always on the hunt for a cheesesteak. Our ideal is soft packed with flavorful beef & onions, gooey cheese, and just a little heat. We came across John's in our search and just had to give it a try. ORIGINAL CHEESESTEAK (4 belly rubs): My favorite of the sandwiches. I like to order it with onions and a mix of sweet and hot peppers. Just the half order is a big one so come hungry or ready to take some home! My hubby loves the JOHN'S SPECIAL CHEESESTEAK and orders that every time. PRO TIP: Use the pepper sauce on the tables if you want more heat (not super spicy) and flavor! Also, if you have leftovers, ditch the bread and take the meat for delicious cheesesteak quesadilla the next day!

  • Steven N.

Let me get the obligatory "I'm from Philly" comment out of the way now... I'm not going to rate an OC cheesesteak against the best of Philly - just as I hope you wouldn't fly from here to Philly to get fish tacos or sushi with the highest of expectations. That being said... This place is pretty damn good! And REALLY damn good compared to my expectations. They lose a star for one reason: There is NO REASON that whiz should be left off the shopping list when you're selling "Philly" cheesesteaks. Period. Inexcusable. Otherwise, nice work John's!

  • Bailey M.

The best philly cheese steak on the west coast!!!! (I'm from the east coast) Definitely coming back!

Delish!! My wife and I split the works philly sub and an order of chili cheese fries. It was enough for both of us and we left full. They have tasty cakes and other Philly brand sodas. Highly recommend. A lot better than the other franchise philly steak sandwich places.

  • Josh A.

Very good, the food comes out nice and hot with a good flavor the bread is very good, but not like I have had in Philadelphia but they have tasty cakes and Philly style pretzels I will go again.

  • Don U.

I always get the Guidos sandwich which comes with delicious Italian deli meats. The full size is enough for two people. Make sure you try the pepper sauce it's yummy.

Best Philly cheesesteak ever!! If you haven't been here yet, you better run on over!! It's located on edinger and Goldenwest inside the plaza behind the bank. If you are planning on going to the swapmeet, stop by this place first, grab a bite and walk it off across the street. You can also park in this plaza instead of looking for parking at the college. Customer service is always friendly and if it's your first time, they have great suggestions. What I always order is "The Works" Cheese Steak which comes with mushrooms, hot peppers, onions and cheese. I get it with extra mushrooms. Half sandwich is $6.59 and Whole is $9.15 for all cheese steak sandwiches. The large is good enough to share with another person unless you have a HUGE appetite. The sandwich comes out piping hot and the bread is soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The meat stays hot to the very last bite!! They slice their beef fresh everyday too!! Don't forget to top your sandwich with the chunky garlic hot pepper sauce! There's a bottle on every table. Don't forget to order their Philly fries! They always come out perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They season it with seasoned salt that perfectly compliments the fries. Side note: they serve beer here too!! +** for those who loves a cold beer with their sandwich. If I can give this place 10 stars I would!! Sometimes I wake up craving this place! Beware, after eating this place, you might not be able to eat anywhere else to satisfy your craving!!

My favorite philly cheesesteak sandwich. Try #4 with hot peppers. Cannot be beaten. And the large size becomes 2 meals.

  • Ryan R.

I'm going to start off by saying that the majority of the negative reviews about this place are 3, 4, even 5+ years Old. Maybe they've gotten their act together over the past couple years because I think the food here is fantastic! I've never had a true "authentic" cheese steak from Philly so I don't know what an actual real one should taste like, so that being said the cheese steaks from this place are pretty dang good! They are spicy so watch out! I like spicy food so thats great for me! They are a bit on the pricy side though. I would have given 5 stars but the restaurant itself looks quite old, a bit rundown, and slightly dirty. A renovation might be a good idea to make the place look better. Other than that, the food is great. I've been there about 5 times and it's always been very good. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

  • Paulina B.

Okay, so after eating here several times dining in and take out I feel like it's only right to update my review. After my first trip here, I had talked about my cheesesteak needing more salt and pepper and my bell peppers more cooked. Maybe the cheesesteak Gods took my review seriously because ever since then.. My cheesesteaks have been consistently full of flavor and my bell peppers are always cooked to perfection! This wouldn't be an establishment that i would eat at every day BUT! If I am craving a nice HOT flavorful Philly Cheesesteak, this would be the only place I would go to! The staff is always friendly and they have NEVER EVER once messed up any of my orders! LOVE

This review is coming from a Philly cheesesteak connoisseur. What qualifies me as that? 1. Being from Philly (yo!) and 2. Eating a lot of cheesesteaks in my day :) Initial impression: huge and awesome looking menu. Fries, cheesesteaks, hoagies and grinders on the menu. Amazing!! Also lots of cool Philly paraphernalia on the wall. While many things were on the menu were making me drool, I was there for a cheesesteak. So I got the works (cheesesteak with peppers, onions, hot peppers and onions). I got the large (it's pretty big!) because the small looked too...well small. It came out piping hot, freshly done. Nice bread, tons of good meat. Downsides: not nearly enough cheese (I really could barely see or taste any) and really spicy for a cheesesteak (the hot peppers outshined the rest of the flavors). And they don't have whiz. How do you not have whiz?! The lack of cheese and lack of whiz is why they are getting a 1 star downgrade. :( The service was really great for a fast good joint. The girl at the front was sweet, brought my food to me instead of having me pick it up at the counter, checked on me a few times, and even wiped down the table for me before I could eat. Pretty awesome service!! Overall it was a pretty good sandwich. I can't wait to try their hoagies!!

As always, we had another great visit to a local favorite. Our food is always fresh, wonderfully prepared and the service is spot on. We met Marco and he made the usual experience even better! Keep up the great work, and we'll be back soon :)

  • Jeffrey E.

Ok not the best Philly steaks, meat is a little to spicy, not sure what they marinate it in, but I consider a genuine cheesesteak to be beef untreated except for maybe salt and pepper so the cheese, peppers and onions can save the show. The service was quick and courteous but I don't see myself going back for more.

Update: the owner John is very sweet and offered me a refund for my sandwich or a gift card to try again. I want to give these place another chance because of all of the rave reviews. I will leave another review once I've tried again. Thank you John.

Wife and I were in Philly recently and went way out of our way to get the obligatory cheesesteaks at Pat's (the original). Both my wife and agree that John's Philly Grille here in SoCal is better. ...nuff said.

Today was my first time eating at John's Philly Grille and I must say; Very Tasty! I ordered the John's Special Philly Cheese Hoagie. You have to eat it quickly otherwise it can get a little soggy & messy but it still tastes fantastic. Great service & very clean! Good place to take a date.

Most authentic philly cheesesteak outside of Philly! Ive searched high and low for a good philly cheesesteak in Cali, I tried Phillys best and the rest... But nothing comes close to Johns philly grill! Its a huge serving and the steak fries are to die for! Its a must if you want a good Hoagie straight outta Philly! Well done, I'll be back

  • Laura G.

As a South Philly girl living in Southern California, John's Philly Grille is a little slice of Philly Heaven in my life. Most people on the West Coast say they make authentic cheesesteaks, but in all true reality they end up tasting like a steaming pile of shit. I know what authentic tastes like. I've eaten at Pat's. I've eaten at Geno's. I've eaten at Jim's and nearly every famous to divey hole in the wall South Philly cheeseteak joint you can imagine. This girl knows her stuff. So, John's really had another thing coming when I walked in the door. First thing I see? Tastycakes. Motherf&%$ing Tastycakes for sale. Brought a little tear to my eye to see a Butterscotch Krimpet, let me tell you. I made the mistake (or possibly the best decision ever) ordering a full cheesteak instead of just a half. The thing was literally as long as my arm. Meat, onions and mushrooms grilled to tasty, tasty perfection. Yep, definitely a winner. In no time I was back to pronouncing Eagles as "Iggles" and having wild fantasies about water ice and Philly AIDS Thrift. If they actually had water ice I probably would have hugged someone. Thank you John's, for making me feel a little less homesick.

The cheese steaks here are so savory! Also ordered some of their fries and they're seasoned to perfection. Totally recommend this for dinner any night of the week. They take phone orders if you don't want to wait for your order.

Can't go wrong with philly grille! This place is S good as the rating tells us, Their sandwiches are amazing, definitely recommend you if your hungry or need something to fill your hunger. They fill the sandwiches so I definitely recommend u getting half, or else your gonna take the other home. Only thing I had hard time is that, wait a few min before you take your first bite... It's extremely hot. You may burn ur tongue like i did.

My family and I came to eat dinner here, very excited to have a good Philly! The staff was friendly, the prices were decently higher then I expected. $65 for 2 adults and 3 kids.. We ordered fried mushrooms and cheese fries, mushrooms were great, but cheese fries were not so good. The Sandwiches came out and the cheese on all of them was not melted. We ordered a few different phillys and all of them were completely tasteless. Very disappointed. The pictures posted here on yelp are very misleading. All 5 phillys came out dry, and very unappetizing.

I would've have given a 5-star rating and my visits there are usually in that category. However, my last trip there ended up being a to-go order which I have never done before. I had ordered the John's special. But I had requested that all of the toppings (lettuce, tomato, onions, and peppers) be placed on the side. My thought process was so the lettuce and tomato and bread wouldn't become soggy any sooner then necessary. Well I picked up my order and returned to by destination and the onions and peppers were no where to be found. That's the whole part of the John's special right? to have all of that stuff on it. Well disappointed...

I think this place has the best cheesesteaks in HB. They have a sports and family atmosphere. It not crazy busy but has a healthy amount of customers come through.

This place is great. I am not the biggest fan of sandwiches, but this place is amazing! Their sandwiches are big, hot, cheesy, and delicious. I love that they have so much variety. I have never had a philly cheese steak in Philly, but I have had several throughout the country and this is the best I have had. If you are in the area and want a good sandwich, this is the place!

Was exactly what I was expecting in a Philly. I just got the Philly Original and left very satisfied. I paid $10 for a full, but the full is very large. So you can definitely make it into 2 meals. Fries were good, but they were just regular steak fries. Great place and great food. If you're in Huntington Beach and are looking for a solid Philly, it's your best bet!

I absolutely love John's Philly Grille! Been going to John's for at least 10 years now and the beautiful thing is that nothing's changed! The bread's outstanding and the meat, shrooms and onions are fanfreakingtastic!!! Anytime we're even close to one of their locations we stop in for the best Philly I've ever had, they definitely beat out Pat's & Geno's!

We went here for lunch. The place I have to say is clean. We had the classic cheese steak sandwich which was really good. It is kind of greasy but this is a cheese steak what do you expect. Truly a great sandwich. The whole is HUGE so I split it. Fries was good as well. If you are around try this place

After 10+ years living in Huntington Beach, I finally stopped by John's Philly Grille to pick up a sandwich for sonny boy. The casual, order at the counter restaurant is located in one of many random strip malls in HB. I entered and the counter person was so friendly and eager to please. My take-out order was: (1) The Originial Cheese Steak w/o Onions The sandwich was HUGE and sonny boy really liked it. I had a lil bite and it was hot, fresh, and delish! I will order the "Works" next time for myself.... =) (2) Chicken Wings Sonny boy enjoyed the deep fried wings that were served with 3 types of dipping sauces. Although, John's Philly Grille can use a re-model, the food was delish and the service was great! 4 Stars!

I've been here numerous times and the food has always been terrific. Today I had their chili cheese burger and fries and my wife had the chicken Parmesan sandwich, both were very good. I highly recommend this place.

Best Philly around!!! love this place food is great service is great! I recommend the #3 come hungry though because these aren't those tiny things you get from most places! Also recommend buying the garlic sauce they sell, so great for cooking steaks or just eating on many different things :-)

So yummy! I got the Philly cheesesteak and my friend got the pastrami both were so awesome! The waitress/hostess was super nice too. I knew it was a win when some fire dept guys showed up for lunch. If you haven't tried it you should!

I am a HUGE Philly Cheesesteak fan (no, I'm not huge, but you know what I mean). This place would be tied for first place with Phillys Best for my favorite steak. They use quality bread, great meat, and plenty of cheese. Their sandwiches are huge. Like two meals worth huge. Their fries are also good. Really thick cut, and crisp. I did notice an adjacent table enjoying these fries covered in cheese. I'll have to make a note of that for a future visit. The service is fine, the counter person was friendly, but I'm sure that she would be better received if she didn't call each and every person HUN or Sweetie. It could be considered condescending to us old folks old enough to be your parents.

Went here for lunch because I wanted something hot and cheesy hahaha The Yelp reviews seemed positive for this place so why not give it a go? Kind of in an unassuming plaza but as soon as you walk in, you could tell it's a local's place. Feels very welcoming and casual. Between two of us, we just got one order of "The Works" with their very own bottles of root beer! Pretty cool. Also the girl working the cash register was nice and friendly enough to explain the differences between the variations and asked us what we liked and didn't like, which is how we ended up with "The Works." When we got our halves, we thought these halves are big enough to be their own sandwiches! I can't believe they're just halves. A single order of "The Works" is seriously enough to feed 2 or even 3 people. I don't know how one person could finish one whole sandwich. Fairly priced for what you're getting with the size, quality of meat and drinks. I would definitely say, from my limited experiences with Philly cheese steaks, this is one of the more memorable places for a Philly cheese steak. The bread was light and crispy but still soft enough to hold all of that cheese and meat together without ripping apart. Meat was juicy and hot and still kept its moisture until the last bite. Plenty of cheese here with onions and everything else. Super fulfilling type of meal. I also liked their root beer. Not too sweet and just that right amount of "root" =) I'm a small guy so next time I come back, I'd have to share half of my order but that's not a bad thing, right? Eating with company is always good hahha Give this place a try if you're hankering for a Philly Cheese Steak that isn't greasy and packed full of flavors until the very last bite.

All this time I've been coming here with Alexis B. and now I realize I haven't written a review?! Shame on me! The food is always SOLID! It's fresh, and consistent each time you eat here which is important to customers like us that have been going here for quite some time. After we got our nails done we were starving and didn't feel like sitting down so I go in the back seat of ATG's car which she has a billion takeout menus and dug out their menu, I had a hard time communicating with the employee over the phone about the pasta salad, the old menu we had contained pasta salad, however when we went inside to pick the food up, new menus and items have changed, they took pasta salad off the menu which saddens me deeply :( Our sandwiches and fried zucchini were CRACK! I've never had fried zucchini this good besides Rose City Bakery in Newport Beach and this zucchini is pretty up there! I always get the simple turkey & cheese deli roll which is the freshest bun I've ever tasted! We did notice that their prices have crept up since we last ate there compared to the old menu, times change and products go up so it's bound to happen. Overall, I'm a happy camper, my food was made fast and good customer service, you can't go wrong with a solid place like this! ^_^

The Godfather, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I eat more than pretty much anyone I know, and it still lasted me the whole day. The fries, pretty much the best fries I've ever had. These are truly a whole new level of potato-y excellence. So amazingly happy to have found this place.

Philly sandwiches was ok. Not spectacular, but just ok. It sucks because I had a craving for some Philly cheese steak sandwiches, but I had to drive like almost an hour to get here. And then to find out the sandwiches were just barely on par. What made things worse was the deuchey cashier guy. What a deuche. It seemed like he had a big ole stick up his keester and just gave me the worse customer service. Luckily I ordered my food to go and didn't have to tolerate his service while I was there. Just in and out to get my so-so sandwiches and carried on along my own business.

Quite possibly one of the best Philly cheesesteaks I've had outside of Philly. It's really hard to find a great cheesesteak outside of Philly and it's a shame. Sandwich here I give a really solid 3 1/2 and an extra 1/2 star for service. Place is kinda a hole-the-wall joint but really well worn. So you don't feel turned off but comfortable inside the place. I got a #6 with everything and was asked whether I wanted it here or to go. I said here and I'd take half with me. Right off the bat, after waiting for my sandwich the guy brought me half my sandwich on a plate to eat there and the other half wrapped up to go! I was amazed. I think this may be only the 2nd time this has ever happened to me. That's service. The cheesesteak is really, really solid and good. I give it a 3 1/2 stars. There's a small fridge with different sauces that I reached for and grabbed some ketchup. Yeah, I know, ketchup with your cheesesteak? Thing I learned last time I was in Philly. Definitely looking forward to coming back here and trying out different things here.

Sadly disappointed! Big on meat not on flavor.. ordered the works w hot peppers but they forgot them. Don't use enough cheese seemed dry. Phillys best has them beat unfortunately.

Can't believe I hadn't tried this place before. Almost didn't find it either but glad I did. The sandwiches are a nice large size; I'm stuffed after eating a whole one. Unlike other cheese steak places they go lighter on the sauces here, so you get the flavor of the meat and it doesn't get sickening after a while. Also you get a free drink if you have a Golden West College student ID.

This place was awesome. I'm from Pittsburgh so I've met some great hoagies in my time!! A great hoagie deli will have the vintagey feel!! Great sport teams on the wall. Now this place does that will Philly teams and Philly colleges!! A must at any great hoagie deli will have a great selection of sandwiches and burgers! This place does this tenfold. Also they will complete the hoagie with infamous Italian bread!! The bread here amazing doesn't even describe it! They also had wonderful selection of local Philly beers! All they need now is Yuengling!

Been eating here for years thought it was time for a review. Very good food. I have ate at all the locations even Anaheim and its always excellent the Hoagies are my favorite but the cheese steaks and burgers are good too. We order are French fries a little well done and then they are perfect. And we always get a tasty cake to go.. We would love a North OC location again, If it was closer to me I would love to work here.Keep upth e good work

I have never been a big fan of Philly sandwiches until i just ate the "john's special". Boy, i am really impressed. My friend and i were in the area running errands and this place had really great reviews. Well i can see why. I met the owner and he told me he has been in business for 20+ years. It is obvious as to why. Our sandwiches came out fast and were very hot and fresh. They serve beer there, which is a plus! The owner came by and thanked us and asked how the Philly's were. My friend and i couldn't speak because we were devouring our delicious cheesy philly steak sandwiches.

  • Sean W.

The Works is the classic, everything you want in a Philly cheese steak. The bread is amazing, grilled onions and bell peppers, pretty damn good. A half sandwich is going for $6.59 at the day of this review. This isn't your average 5 dollar foot long though! This place makes an amazing sandwich. I also had an order of the pizza fries which has some amazing seasoning with, as you might guess is topped with marina and cheese. Great place definitely bookmark it!

  • Jasmine P.

A hole in the wall I must say. I recommend their "The Works" philly sandwich. Me and my boy KennyCakes only heard about this place through help because we were near Goldenwest college and we're looking for something to eat. Only thanks to yelp that we found this place!

  • Greg S.

This place used to be GREAT. I think over the last few months they changed some of their basic ingredients. The Bread used to be flakey and crisp, now its kinda chewy and soggy. The steak has been overcooked the last 2 times i've gone as well.

This place is pretty damn good, if you don't believe me, you can ask Kobe Bryant himself! Apparently he eats it all the time lol. Nice little spot to catch a good Philly cheese steak or to catch a drink and hangout. We got the combo #4 " The works". Same as a Philly cheese steak but with some other veggie goodies inside. The meat and the cheese was the favorite part for me, I like the cheese to be chewy ( like mozzarella ). Everything taste really good, cooked on the spot fresh. We got some of their " Pizza fries" with the sandwich. I like the idea, and it did taste good, but I honestly thought that the marinara sauce was a bit bland, no biggie though. I just ended up dipping the fries w marinara in ketchup or BBQ sauce. You end up spending between $6 to $9 depending on the sandwich and the size you want. The serving is enough and you finish very content. You don't get cheated on the amount of food is given to you.

  • Bob L.

Hands down THE BEST cheesesteak in Orange County. Very Authentic, most places that say they have Philly cheesesteaks but they don't have the right roll, this place does. You will not be disappointed. My only criticism is they do not offer the Whiz, only provolone. I also recommend the Hoagies, Guido'd Favorite is the bomb! And the side of fries is enough to feed a small village.

    (5)

Really really good steaks. Good fries and surprisingly, a few nice beer selections. Chicken cheesesteak is actual chicken breast which I loved. As an east coast transplant myself, the dessert selection reminded me of home.

    - Locale Destination - It's on Goldenwest St and Edinger Ave in Huntington Beach. It's across street from Toy's R us. Decor is the same as any other "Philly steak sandwich" place - baseball stuff and supporting community events etc. Plenty of seating. One

Do not get all the great reviews. This place was less then good hardly a 4.5 star place! I had been craving a good philly cheese steak sand which and this place kept popping up on yelp with great reviews, so I finally got a chance to try it tonight. My husband got a Godfather, he thought it was Amazing! So that's why I still give 3 stars! But I ordered a Chicken Philly Cheese steak with peppers And onions, and it was too spicy, the chicken was over cooked and there was way too much cheese. I couldn't even finish it. We also got onion rings which we pretty good. My expectations were really high for this place with all the great reviews that it was such a disappointment for me tonight.

One of the best philly sandwiches to get around in OC. Not too pricey, huge servings, wide selection, Both locations are legit (there's one on Beach/Indianapolis - which I used to go to about 10 years ago). Service is always friendly and food can be ordered to go (even sometimes a little later than they are open if you ask nicely!) #4 The Works with everything in it for me! It seems that the mini plaza has some cosmetic remodeling done on the outside, but the businesses are open. I believe there's a "Relax the Back" and a liquor store next to John's Philly Grille.

    (5)
  • Allison S.

Probably the best Philly sandwich I've had to date. Fork over the extra $3 for a full size sandwich, which could easily feed two. I had the mushroom cheese steak with everything, but I would probably skip the chili the second time around as it overwhelms the sandwich (i.e. everything tastes spicy). Fries and fried zucchini were a little better than your average find. I didn't see Kobe's picture but a friend did. Any place Kobe goes is good enough for me (and should be for you too!)

Best Cheese Steak sandwich! Spring break lunch at John's Philly Grille was really good. My daughter's and I ordered Cheesesteaks with hot peppers, grilled onions and provolone on their delicious fresh rolls. We shared an order of Philly Steak Fries. The fries are a perfect accompaniment to the Cheesesteak. They are thick and perfectly seasoned. Their food is cooked up fresh and their service is friendly. Definitely our favorite!

  • Nam B.

One of the best Philly cheese steak in OC. The Works (beef, mushroom, peppers, onion, cheese, and hot peppers) is good, but you have to add in their Pepper Plant Garlic Sauce, than it becomes just awesome to eat :D! A large size is good enough for two. They also sell their own John's Philly Grille sodas here. Rootbeer taste sort of like the real brewed kind.

    (4)
  • Joel M.

Simply amazing! Best Philly cheesesteak I've had! I ordered the John's special and it was phenomenal. Use the special garlic hot sauce to give it a kick. The service was also great and they bring the food to your table with a smile.

Great sandwiches, plenty of room here, but avoid on hot days as they don't have A/C or even working fans, hotter than he'll in here right now. Probably 83+. Get it to go.

Mmmm, what a great philly! Been looking for one for a while and looked it up on yelp. I finally checked it out and it was so tasty. I had johns special and husband had the works. The works seems to be the better tasting philly. we had it was some hot onion rings and fries. Both great tasting I will definitely return

  • Paul C.

The food is pretty good. its not going to blow your socks off but they are okay. I really only like the works Philly cheese steak. I have tried the other sandwiches and hoagies and they really are not that great. If you get the fries, you can share with a few people.

Aside from having huge portions and killer food. Great customer service. Thanks guys! Works Cheese-steak, very good stuff. Chili Cheese fries, I'll stick to regular fries, good chili, but wrong kind for chili cheese fries. Who doesn't love a freaking taste-cake?

This is by far the best best best steak sandwich I've had. This place is no joke. The steak is perfect. Everything is perfect. Great price for the amount of food you get. If I could I would eat this all day everyday!

  • Megan T.

I abolutely love John's Philly Grill. Always consistent, quick and delicious! I tend to get the chicken Philly cheese with onions and peppers. Some think that their peppers can be spicy but I love them. I also like to put some of their hot sauce on it. Get the cheese fries. Thick cut steak cut ,yum! You'll be in a heavenly food coma afterwards.

  • Michael C.

This is my favorite place to go to get a philly cheesesteak sandwich. Even Kobe goes here, they have an autographed check). The sandwiches are huge and I always forget how big they are when I make the mistake of ordering the whole sandwich. Half a sandwich is enough to fill me up and a whole is perfect to share. My favorites are The Original and The Works. The Works is loaded with all the peppers, onions, mushrooms and other good stuff. One tip is to resist eating it right away. It can be very hot and can burn your mouth. It's really hard to resist and it is almost worth it.

    (4)
  • Steven M.

Got the John's special and an order of cheese fries. The sandwich was really filling lots of meat and a good amount of cheese. The fries were ok, could have been better if there was more cheese. No Cheese Whiz here guys.... Overall, im not a big fan of Cheesesteaks without the cheese whiz... The cheesesteak here is alright... but not really something i would come back for. Need the cheese whiz with my cheesesteak

Ehhh I'm not that impressed. 3.5 stars. I happened to be in the area running errands when I found this place thru the Yelp app on my phone. I LOVE Philly cheese steaks , I will always order it at least once if its on the menu, but I just don't know about this place. I got "The Works" sandwich which comes with peppers mushrooms and onions, and I got an order of the fried zucchini and their brewed orange soda. The roll that it comes with is very tasty and complimentary, the vegetable ingredients are tasty too, but the steak was not that great. It had a weird texture, too chewy I think, and it ultimately lacked flavor. I probably ate about half of my half sandwich, maybe even less. The fried zucchini was yummy dipped into the ranch sauce it comes with, but its not your typical zucchini sticks. They slice the zucchini the "short way" and they're very thin slices so felt I got more batter than vegetable. I did not like the soda at all, wayyyyy to sweet and little to no carbonation. Imma stick with my coke next time. Service was quick, everyone was polite, so no disappointments there. Price was fair for the amount of food your getting, but satisfaction is always more important to me and I did not feel satisfied. I guess if I'm in the area I'd like to give this place another shot, but I don't imagine that'll be anytime soon. I'm actually thinking of trying out the cheesesteak place in Irvine that everyone is talking about in their reviews.

  • Josh S.

This place wins hands down the best Philly cheesesteak in the OC. It is the best I have ever had. The service is always good, and somewhat fast. If you are into all things Philadelphia this is the place for you. They have all kinds of Philly sports memorabilia. I recommend the John's special and get it with extra cheese, you will not be disappointed.

    (5)
  • Ashley L.

I ordered "the works" Philly cheesesteak and the pizza fries. Instead I got spaghetti fries. It didn't taste anything like pizza. It was spaghetti sauce with grated Parmesan. Plus, the fries were soggy. Even their Philly fries are mushy. Maybe if they were double cooked it would have been better. The cheesesteak was alright. Not the best I've ever had. There wasn't a whole lot of flavor at all just spice. The only pros are that the full sandwich is huge, and not bad for $10. You can easily get two to three meals out of it.

    (2)
  • Thomas J.

I will never go here again. They are cheapskates and not very smart. I tried to order a whole philly cheesesteak with only half green peppers like i always have for over 3 years coming in here. There place charges a ridiculous extra charge on a half cheesesteak. SO, if you buy two halves it costs more than buying one whole cheesesteak. Dumb charge. Ripoff! A whole cheese steak with or without green peppers cost the same here. I don't like them and my friend does so we split it . Never had a problem until the last week. I was told that the owner won't sell it like that. I was told it is like making two different sandwiches. No, he just wants to rip people off for charging more for two halves. Dumb choice. Really, different condiments ? I can order a McD hamburger without onions or with and it doesn't cost anymore and it is still a hamburger. A cheesesteak is still a cheesesteak no matter the condiments. Wake up John!! You lost my business forever. I will tell everyone i know NOT to come to your grille.

  • Jackie D.

Ok I have been to the one on Beech and I loved it. The issue though, may be what I ordered. When I was at the other location I got "The Works", the original Philly with the fixins. At this location I opted for the South Philly, which was sooooo bland. The South Philly was meat cooked in tomato sauce and a touch of cheese, I want my Philly, Cheesy. My hubby had "The Works" at this location and he was smiling eating this sandwich the whole time. So obviously he loved his sandwich. I will give this place a try again because I'm not a quitter, plus I know that there other items that are good. This time I took a chance and it failed. Never again will I have the South Philly, sometimes you just need to stick with the classics

  • Matt E.

Stopped by with my friend who hip'ed me to this place a while ago for lunch before the weekly tournament at HBDGC and was introduced to "The Pepper Plant" chunky garlic hot sauce that to have as a condiment here. When I sat down and my friend asked "do you put the hot sauce on your sandwich?", I was dumbfounded...not knowing about The Pepper Plant sauce brought a look of amazement to my bud's face. "Oh dude, this stuff is a large part of why I come here!" The sauce is made up in Gilroy and only have a handful of locations where it can be found and bought down here in Southern California. John's not only have bottles for use when dinning in, but they are sell bottles and gallon jugs of the stuff as well. Adding it to to the sandwich gives it not only a little kick in spiciness, but it also adds the flavor of garlic that really adds to the flavor (especially the "Works" sandwich I get). If I could add another half star to my 5 star review, I would. Good stuff!

First off, I think I've had less than good service maybe once in the countless times I've come here, and then I don't think I've seen the girl since. Even the kitchen people that sometimes bring my to-go orders to me are completely polite and friendly. I don't feel like I'm getting rushed out, or that it's all mechanical. The girl that's usually there in the evenings is very nice, and tends to remember my order (mostly) and my name, and there's something about that that I like. The food is good, overall. The sandwiches, cold and hot, are some of the best around. Their Club is just ridiculously full of flavor, and the South Philly covered with the garlic sauce is sometimes the only thing I want after a stressful day. I don't even like melted cheese, and yet I crave that sandwich. It's not the cheapest sandwich place, but you get what you pay for, and it is definitely worth a few more bucks if you have it to spend on a good sandwich.

    (5)
  • Conor N.

Second time here. Love the hot sandwiches. Bread is perfect mix of crunchy and chewy. I've tried both the original and the works. It's really the perfect sandwich with the crunchiness of the peppers, creaminess of the cheese with the tasty meat. I'll definitely be coming back for more. The large is enough to feed two people for lunch and save just enough room for kandy cakes.

  • Kevin V.

Sandwiches here are damn good. The side orders are meh, avoid pizza fries!

  • Jenn H.

Found the location on Beach Blvd with the outdoor seating ages ago and it's been a favourite since. It's a good sandwich. According to someone I know who grew up in the Philadelphia area these are as close to authentic as it gets on the west coast. I cannot attest to that. I can say they are good sandwiches and worth the money you pay for them. I like this location for the indoor seating now that I've got toddlers. A half sandwich is enough to fill me, and on the occasions I over reach and get a large it generally gets eaten despite the pain I put myself in to do so. (It's worth it.) The sides are always tasty and crisp, and bonus they sell tasty kakes. The Garlic hot sauce is all kinds of yummy.

  • Sean S.

Wow, was really surprised by this place. I've had cheese steaks at other places, but John's outclassed them. Their cheese steaks are huge and filled with grilled steak. The prices are reasonable for what you get and the service was very friendly. Their house brand cream soda was outstanding and they have pretty tasty chicken wings as well. I would highly recommend this place if you want a great cheese steak sandwich. I will definitely be coming back here.

  • Gabe I.

Definitely one of the better Philly cheesesteak places I've been too. I've never had a REAL cheesesteak from Philly, so I'm comparing to what I've had around here. Hole in the wall places are usually always good, and this place definitely impressed me. I ordered the half size mushroom cheesesteak with a side of steak fries. I have no complaints. I will come back here again.

Mr. Kobe Bryant: -5 championships (and counting!) -Olympic Gold Medalist -Permanent All Star -Definition of WINNER -Oh, and he's a Philly native Eats at John's Philly Grille. What more do you need to know? Half sandwiches for about $6, full sandwiches for about $9. Get the mushroom cheese steak with all the fixings. The mushroom flavor marinades the steak to make it extra juicy. Eat here and you'll be a winner, too. And no, not Charlie Sheen winner. Kobe Bryant winner.

Tasty philly but the bread was dry and if you get the hot peppers be forewarned that they are HOT. Found the establishment to be below par and in need of sprucing up. When in the mood for a PCS I would give it another try.

Great sandwiches!!! Usually get the half #4 (the works) with the hot peppers on the side.... Wow is it good!!! Then I go to the swapmeet across the street to walk off the calories. Took my family members who were visiting from Scotland here for lunch & they loved it too.

this is truly as good as a sandwich gets. the bread is delicious and everyone that works here is super friendly. the owner is always around to greet the customers and even to carry food to tables. best philly cheesesteak ever. philly sub was really good too. they have the best steak fries. tons of food....go there hungry!

5 stars for food & Service BUT THE NEW GIRL read on. I've been coming here for over 5+ years I've been to all the locations and have a connection with the workers since I am a regular. I drive from Anaheim to This location on purpose because I love it here Says alot because there's a Phillis best literally 5 minutes from my house.. But there is a new cashier (girl many piercings, dark hair) and she is by far the worse cashier ever. She literally threw my food on the table. Didn't say hi or thank you. Just took my money and walked to the back. I love this place and it would suck to loose a customer just because this person. For now ill go to another Location just because she's that bad

Great staff here! All the sandwiches are amazing and very meaty! My favorite is the mushroom cheese steak

One word... Pastrami. Yes, pastrami. Add some parmesan cheese to that and you will be thankful. If you like it spicy, make sure you add the peppers. When I had the pastrami, it was because my hubby brought it back for me. He was worried that it would be soggy. It wasn't. The bread here is amazing! Soft on the inside, flaky on the outside. The meat, was tasty and pretty lean. Fast forward a week later and I can't stop thinking about the pastrami. The wolfpack decide to meet up with our buddy who was working in the area. And walking in, it has your sport bar feel. And then I realize that my order is not going to be as simple as I thought. This is going to be very hard. This is a restaurant that makes Philly Cheesesteaks! PSC? Pastrami? PSC? Pastrami? Since I already knew what the pastrami tasted like, I decided to try their cheesteak. It wasn't bad. But I will definitely stick with pastrami next time. Also, hubby and I were able to split a large sandwich, which was the equivalent of two smalls. It comes out cheaper that way. ;)

BEST PASTRAMI SANDWICHES EVER!!!! I love this place. I go there to get a pastrami sandwich at least twice a week. AMAZING!!

Food: Can't go wrong with a philly cheese steak shop. So thumbs up there. Price: Reasonable for the size. Ambiance: The place tries to portray "hey welcome to Philly" feel as it is decorated with anything associated with Philly. Overall: I would gladly come back if I was living closer to this area.

Not sure what the hype is about with this place seams like no one has anything bad to say.. I ordered the "Original Cheese-stake" asked the guy what came on it and told him I wanted it how it came and he said "ok so everything?" my response thinking thats what he was referring to "yes" apparently "everything" is a mountain of peppers with some meat and cheese.. Because I sure didn't get a Cheese-stake with peppers in it.. Evey bite was overflowing with peppers and pepper seeds, sorry I wanted a sand which not to chew on a pepper. I couldn't even taste the meat or the cheese so I had to pull pieces of it out to find what the meat tasted like and my mouth was on fire! :( Meat was DRY! over cooked and flavorless, the cheese was nearly nonexistent.. Its a cheese-stake.. I would expect at-least 3x the amount of cheese that was actually in my sand which. This place is expensive! Half sand which is over $6.00?! seriously for a 6"???? They do pack in the "meat?" or in my case the peppers.. So it made for a heavy 6" but still not worth it in my book. Saw they had "John's Home made Soda" so I instantly grabbed a Cream Soda. Warning these things are $2.00 each! Talk about a burn to the budget. But the soda sucked.. It was like drinking a tube of cake icing that had been sitting out left open for a day or so.. Not the right flavor for Cream was more of an overly sweet vanilla even so.. uck!! Over all.. Cheap? I think not.. Yelp rating for cheap is a bit high for a fast lunch rating.. sorry fast food is cheaper.

Place has a little bit of a stale old man stench when you walk in, food is average at best, meat is bland, mushrooms And onions need more caramelizing, also In my humble opinion the place is totally overrated. On the plus side you get a huge sandwich for $10 with fresh ingredients, and very friendly service.

Do you like cheese? Do you like steak? Do you like both of these things put together on a big ass piece of bread served piping hot? Then get your ass down to John's Philly Grille to get a massive tasty cheese steak and make sure to pick up some of that birch beer!

Rated 4.5 stars. The Philly steak sandwiches are freakin' good for the West Coast. This is the place I go when I get a craving. I've been eating here for quite some time and the food is consistently good. It's a hole-in-the-wall joint with an interior filled with Philly memorabilia. My standard usual order is: #5 "THE WORKS" Cheese Steak ($5.89-half, $8.79-whole) - 4.5 stars Mushroom, peppers, onion, cheese, hot peppers and provolone cheese The bread is light and crispy, charred beef and gooey mixture is just right. PHILLY FRIES ($2.99) - 4.5 stars Thick steak fries sprinkled with a Cajun seasoning. It's similar to Red Robin fries... hmmm.. The service is friendly and good, the server is from the East coast. On my last and most recent visit, I saw a picture of Kobe Bryant with one of the employees. Wow... I wonder what made him stop by to this place in the OC.

So this is how a real authentic philly cheesesteak tastes like.. I was craving a philly cheeseteak because I kept looking at the pictures to this place and at philly's best. The reason why I chose to go here is because it's much closer to my home and everyone on yelp kept raving that John's is totally better. Bunny and I came here during the day and we ordered the #4 "The Works" and Pizza Cheese Fries. The sandwich was a really good mix of meat, onions, peppers, mushrooms, and melted cheese on a hot fresh bread roll. It was a pretty big sandwich too. I took the first bite and thought "hm. this is pretty bland." *puts a shitload of the garlic pepper sauce and tabasco in* "omg so much better!" The sandwich is good but the garlic pepper sauce made it taste much more delicious! The pizza fries were ok. I am not a fan of steak fries because it's not as crisp as small cut fries. The marinara sauce with the cheese was an interesting combo on top of the fries but it didn't give me the full flavor that I wanted so I dipped it in ketchup for more flavor. Overall, I like this place and would come back since it's right across from my school. :)

This is a very small "hole in the wall" type shop. So you know it was absolutely delicious! Three are several types of cheese steaks as well as a variety of hoagies on the menu. You can taste the quality of their ingredients. The employees provide a speedy, friendly service as well. All in all well worth it!

Trying it for the first time. The fries were great. The steak did not have much flavor. The bun should of been toasted. Overall it can only improve. I have had real Philly cheese steaks and while these are a good substitute. I place Lowery seasons salt on it and it makes it all the better, I brought it home and placed it on some french baguette bread and it was a rock star . if they gave a option on the bread to place it on this would knock it out of the park. With the few little things It wont keep me from going back. This is a nice place to eat at. Best to call your order in and save your wait time.

Came here on a first visit with my hubby recently using the Groupon deal. The owner "John" was very friendly. Ordered the mushroom cheese Philly foot long without onion and 1/2 pastrami with everything. Somehow they left out the mushroom so it turn out to be just the Philly with cheese. The size of the foot long was huge, puts Subway to shame! However, I was disappointed as the beef was lacking any taste, I had to add salt & pepper to eat it. The pastrami on the other hand was very salty and a bit chewy & not very tender. My hubby ate the cheese steak but left the pastrami alone. Also ordered the fries which was again a huge size! Overall, average quality...

So let me begin by saying I've had a yelp account for over a year and never cared to write a review, I just used it to read them. But this place was so freaking delicious I decided to base my first review on John's Philly Grille...YES IT'S THAT GOOD! So I ordered "The Works" cheese steak and split an order of Fried Zucchinis with a friend of mine. You know the meat is juicy when the sauce just drips down your arms, and the bread was just soaking up all the juices. BOMB. I'm very critical about fried zucchinis, just because I haven't had good ones like the ones they make at Carl's Jr. (don't judge me -_-) Usually at other places it just tastes bland, but the one they have at John's Philly Grille are so flavorful! I think it's a combination of the batter and the zucchini being cooked perfectly. My best advice, have your bed ready because you're gonna get a mad food coma, but well worth it.

Probably the best one I've had in OC. There really isn't many spots and the other place I know of is Philly's best and that place is terrible. The meat quality here was awesome. I really liked how it tasted and the cheese was just oozing. I had the #6 special hoagie. I probably wouldn't go with the hoagie bread next time but it was still good. They also have their own homemade rootbeer here. It's a nice little spot that cooks everything made to order. Not too crowded during the lunch rush and right by an area with a lot of food spots. Recommendation: Philly Cheesesteak anything here.

By far the best Philly I've ever had the pleasure of putting in my mouth. I've been searching far and wide for the perfect Philly and here it is my friends. John's Philly Grille has come and swept me off my gluttonous feet (or perhaps, stomach). Do yourself a favor and give this place a try. You will be coming back for more.

The 9 inch philly was filing for sure. Felt like I was bingeing. Taste was alright, I've had better Philly's before. At cheaper joints too. Next time I'll try something else. They have 1 decent sized flat screen, was playing some old school sports events. Not sure if that's what they play all the time. Atmosphere was alright. Going to the restroom was a lil awkward. You pass by the kitchen, kinda. Felt kind of run down, needs an upgrade and moved somewhere else, which I doubt will happen... I'ono w/e. They have a decent sized menu list. The pizza fries was pretty new to me and taste pretty dam good. Maybe next time I'll get a regular sized sandwich and pizza fries for sure.

Been going to this place since I was a kid and it is the best cheese steak in orange county. Bread and ingredients always taste fresh and the Sandwiches are always made to order. The appetizers are great too! Especially the deep fried mushrooms and The fries. The fries are thick cut and seasoned. The Pepper Plant Garlic Sauce is great with everything there! So make sure you grab a bottle before you start eating! This place also has a fair amount of seats and TVs along the walls. Service is on point and always friendly.

Another tasty experience at John's Philly Grille, I always get the works whole sandwich which is a large cheesesteak for around 10 bucks. I always forget to ask for no mushrooms so if you do not like mushrooms make sure you let them know or you are picking them out like me. The place could be a bit cleaner and I don't think there is a public bathroom to wash your hands or anything but oh well. Solid cheesesteak.

This place is bomb. Whenever I come here I get "the works" and the fried zucchini. The place is also decorated with sports related stuff and the tv is always on a sports channel. I think this is just a really good place to eat some awesome, but very bad for you food. The service here was alright, there aren't any waitresses, so I really can't rate on service. But all you do is order at the front and find a table to sit and the food will come to you.

John's philly grille seems like a wonderful place to watch sports. There were TVs, there were delicious food, and there were beer(even though i'm not old enough but beer while watch sports sounds like a win to me). There are many pics and logos of sports teams and when you go order your food there is pics of Kobe bryant. Ah John's philly grille seems like a Lakers fan restaurant and that is a + for Ernest. ^_^ On reality though, I find John's philly grille to be enjoyable. They give you a great portion for how much you pay. $6 for half a sandwich and $9 for a whole sandwich. 3 more dollars for the other half of a sandwich sounds like a win to me as well. I end up getting the John's special philly cheese steak which was really good. I like the fact that although i waited a long time when i took my first bite it burned my tongue because at least i know it's worth the wait and they took their time making it. The ingredients worked well together and if i was in that area again I would myself being here once in awhile. One of my most favorite philly cheese steak place i've tried!!!

1.5 stars. Came here looking for some quick food. We don't know the area so we relied on Yelp. I'm disappointed in you, Yelp. It was quick, but not very good. We got a half mushroom cheesesteak and a half Guido's (Italian) sub. The meat on the cheesesteak had no seasoning whatsoever. I had to add salt before every bite. Even my husband, who dislikes salt and never adds it to anything, had to add salt. There wasn't much cheese. The Italian sub had grilled onions, and it wasn't deli meat, which was really strange. It was way too thick and kinda gross. There didn't seem to be much in the way of seasoning on that either; I didn't see or taste a single bit of the oregano seasoning they claim to put on it. They both were super soggy, despite the fact that we got them both toasted, which made them hard to eat as they fell apart. The one thing that impressed me is that they somehow managed to keep the inside of the sandwich really really hot. I was halfway through and all of a sudden started burning my mouth on it! That was worth a .5 star. They also messed up our order- we asked for them to add pickles (since they don't come standard on the sandwich) and extra pickles, as well as hot pepper on the side for the Italian. No hots were given and there wasn't a single pickle in the sandwich. Also noticed some cross contamination going on- there were little bits of the Italian meats in the cheesesteak, so be wary of that too. The prices were way higher than expected- $2+ more than the menu I found for them online. And this is literally the first place that I've been to since I moved to California almost four years ago that didn't have the toilet seat covers in the bathroom. =( But while I was in the bathroom, the guy asked my husband how the food was. When he explained why we were dissatisfied, he gave him a tastykake to make up for it. I thought that was a nice touch, so that's the reason for the full star. However, I wouldn't come back here again.

Cheese-steak & SANDWICHES! I came her for years for the occasional cheese-steak, which I do not eat regularly, but I do enjoy. Recently it occurred to me to try one of their deli meat sandwiches. So far the roast beef and 'american' sandwich have me very impressed. This is now a frequent lunch stop for me. The ingredients are all very high quality and it is all prepared in, what I would describe as, a very 'east coast style'. I DO NOT appreciate how most California deli's prepare a sandwich. (former New Yorka') Best deli sandwich in town - no doubt. Regarding price, I can get a bag of chips, a filling 9" sub, and an iced tea for less than 10 bucks. Get it on!

It has been years since I have been to Philly Grille. I used to LOVE it and for some reason today I decided to head a bit out of my way so I could enjoy "The Works" sandwich. I could could taste the meat, cheese, bell peppers, mushrooms and grilled onions all morning. I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed. Overall, the sandwich was really good. The bread was soft and fresh, the peppers and onions were also fresh (unlike another Philly place I sometimes frequent that uses canned mushrooms and peppers). There was a lot of meat and for the price, it was a great deal. BUT, the reason that I am giving it 3 stars (wish I could do 3.5) is because the meat was sooooo bland!! Absolutely no flavor at all. I had my sandwich "to go" so when I got it home I had to add LOTS of salt and pepper to make it flavorful. Once I was done doctoring it up, it was amazing - I ate the whole thing. I wish I could take the fresh ingredients from John's and mix it with the flavorful meat of the other place I mentioned, and there would be a perfect sandwich.

Came to John's for the first time and OMG what a sandwich! I usually go to Philly's Best, but that's about to change. John's will be my go to place for cheesesteak Sammys! Didn't look at the menu, just told the guy behind the counter I wanted a Philly cheesesteak. He asked me how I wanted it, I told him however he would eat it. He brings me this huge sandwich overflowing with beef, melted cheese, onions, peppers and mushrooms all grilled, and piled on an amazing roll. The roll was crispy on the outside (the kind of crispy that sends crumbs flying all over the table and my shirt) and so soft on the inside. This mixture of goodness was piping hot, juicy and had a wonderful spicy accompanied by a whole lot of flavor, chased down by a Sam Adams. Damn it was good! Baseball game was on; Dodgers - vs - Philly. I thought: What, do they run recorded Philly games on TV? But no, it just so happened to be today's game on the tube. More than the game, I was looking over all the memorabilia. The wall was plastered with Jerseys, posters, pennants, you name it of all Philadelphia sports teams. They have this one Flyers hockey jersey that's autographed and stained. Couldn't tell if it was blood or sauce the player spilled on it. John's Philly Grille = 5 stars

I would like to convey to you how much John's Philly Grille (JPG) made an exceptional first impression. If The Works sandwich had the ability to speak and possessed an attitude, I can only compare it to a Chi McBride-esque type of personification (from the movie "Let's Go to Prison"). "Hello olfactory, I hear you've had quite the weekend. Allow me to open the door to your senses. You smell that? Yes, that's me. I'm sexy. Pardon me gustatory, did you notice that? The peppers are tasty aren't they? Then that makes me double sexy. I know you felt that yummy essence of Philly goodness crawl on your ring and pinky finger, I know you're excited... You're piloerect. There is a constant thematic element about Philly places that I've been to. The memorabilia, paraphernalia, the philantrophy plaques... I find it very warming and compelling to support the cause by (now) becoming a return patron. If you can imagine what I was thinking when I was here... I like to look around and people watch. The walls had plaques that supported schools and league teams since 1995. In business at least 16 something years? THAT is outstanding. Don't let the sixty something reviews fool you, these veterans are very experienced in this realm of food, just not in the realm of Yelp. That sandwich. The Works. It was delicious. Please know that I'm not a connoisseur in Phillies. Hell, I've never been to Philadelphia but damn, I like this so much better than anywhere I've been to. Such delicious peppers, ideal mixture of spices and taste. Beautiful ratio of bread, cheesesteak and cheese. "I once spent a year in Philadelphia, I think it was on a Sunday." -W. C. Fields

What an amazing cheesesteak I just ate. MMMmmmmm. That's really all you need to know. Go get one. I also tried the Italian hoagie, which was good and stuff, but blown out of the water by the cheesesteak. They give you their special hot pepper blend which is delish, and special hot sauce for you to liven up your sandwich. They also brew their own sodas; we tried the root beer and it was tasty. They have two televisions in here tuned to the latest sports games. Philly sports gear plasters the walls. Marvelous. You can feel the authenticity of Philadelphia's finest oozing out of the walls. Cheesesteak.

Went in and stuck with a half Mushroom and Cheese Philly. It's always hard for me to review sammies... because I love it when the meat is delicious and greasy, and it was, along with the onions and pepper. I'll have to try the specials next time when I'm not in a hurry. For the price and taste though, its a winner.

The cheese fries are sooooo good here. I always have to get them, and with extra cheese please!! They come out piping hot, and the cheese is melting on the top. You have to eat it right away or it will get hard and the cheese will start to go hard again. The Philly cheesesteaks are delicious. Tender and juicy, the meat is nicely flavored, and again, I always ask for more cheese! I think this place is really expensive for what it is. Everytime I come in for a quick sandwich and fries, I end up spending almost 15 dollars! The TVs are small so watching sports is kind of annoying. The place is a little run down, but its relaxing and easy going. The lady who takes the orders is a bit grouchy, but the guy making the food in the back is super nice, and when I take large orders to go, he always makes sure I have everything I need.

Ohhhhhhh that john's!!!!!!!!!! what can I say i'm gonna be coming here forever....! i'm so eternally grateful for my fiance to introducing this place to me 6 years ago. The people who work there are so sweet and friendly. Always with smiles. They always remember us and what we plan to order. You get your food super hot and the aroma ahhhhh. You cant be all cute and perty while eating his Philly!! We always get the GRILLED CHICKEN AND MUSHROOM w/ extra HOT PEPPERS && you cant forget their heavenly FRIES w/ side peppers and hot sauce. oh man oh man, just thinking of it makes me want to drive out there for it.

So I finally got to try "The Works". I guess I expected to be amazing since everyone else think so. It wasn't bad, but I felt like it was missing some flavor. I love spicy food and I thought "The Works" was very spicy. I got a half order and it was just over $6. Overall, it was A-OK.

Yeah, this place is never, ever going to be good for me but I will always stay loyal so long as they have hot pastrami subs with everything. The cooks at this place are like artists with a grill and onions and peppers instead of paints! The fries are a guilty pleasure the grease soaks the bag before you've even gotten to your car. Plus it's a nice atmosphere a lot of fun and really nice people behind the counter. Make sure you grab some Tasty Kakes on the way out, if they have them in at the time, it's a great desert!

Went for a Philly cheese with mushrooms - OMG!!! So good I can't believe it. Decor is a little sketchy, but hey, it's a Philly Cheese samich shop, not an upscale steakhouse. The bread had a little crust to it, but soft and chewy as well - perfect. And the flavor of the meat, cheese, onions, peppers and mushroom - WOW - outstanding. I had to drive about 12 min back to the office and the sandwich was still piping hot and wrapped well so it didn't leak all over my car. So glad I decided to stop here, will definitely be back, even though I'm a Steeler fan - I can put up with the Eagles on the wall for a good munch!

i love philly cheese steaks, so when i saw the reviews on this place i had to try it. pros: big portions fresh ingredients hot peppers.. are actually hot. prices are fair cons: service was ok. meat was a little dry, i wish there was more juice i asked for mayo ... i couldn't even tell if they really put it on? c'mon man. will i be back? yes. it was overall a good experience for me and i want to try some of their other options out.

found this place by accident. I went to another establishment in the same center and we breaked for lunch.. walked over and wha la... found the best philly cheese sandwich in the world! Smaller, dark, dirty-old-carpeted hole in the wall, but a MEAN Philly! Sorry East Coasters, no Cheese-Whiz here. Great, thick, steak fries and O-rings as well. Haven't ventured much from the Philly Cheesesteak though, no need too...just too good! Their Phillies are large, ingredient-stuffed and moist. You may, or may not want extra cheese. Overall the best Philly out there I think. Please let me know if anyone knows of a better Philly Cheese!

Best cheese streak outside of Philly! I used to occasionally work next door and it always smelled so good! The employees are nice and the service is fast. Plus, the portions are freaking huge! I can't finish a small (half). Everything is cooked to order and the bread is so yummy, light airy, with a little crust. (They get it from De Simone's across the parking lot) I like: . the plain cheese steak: thinly sliced meat and provolone. You can't go wrong . my sis always gets the works with extra onions . hubsters gets the plain but adds tons of giardiniera (pickled peppers) . philly fries: thick cut with seasoned salt . zucchini: i usually steer clear of these, but they are so good here! Nice medallions perfectly cooked and seasoned

This is my go-to cheese steak restaurant in Orange County. Their sandwiches are loaded, I always leave full and with a smile on my face. This place screams Philly, the walls are covered in Philly sports memorabilia. John's has a very laid back atmosphere, I love coming here when I want a filling, tasty lunch. The french fries are thick cut and piled high, their onion rings are great too. I haven't tried many of the sandwiches, I usually stick to the green pepper cheese steak with everything. The sandwich is always loaded full of meat and veggies. I prefer extra cheese, but that's just me. Be sure to ask for some garlic hot sauce to put on the sandwich, it takes it to another level! I've searched Orange County high and low for a good cheese steak place, this is it!

Monday after a great, fun, but tiring and strenuous weekend. Grumpy, sore, exhausted, famished. Craving ... CALORIES. Calories in the form of a lot of fat & protein. No-fuss, no-fanfare, inexpensive calories. Via Yelp found John's Philly Grille conveniently located close to home. Was a bit annoyed at paying ~$13 for a full-sized #3 (Philly w/ Mushrooms) & an order of fries. But man did it ever hit the spot and satisfy a massive, specific craving. The full-size sandwich is big. The plate of fries is big. Hell, each FRY is big. Certainly enough for 2 separate satisfying meals, probably close to ~2000 calories. Which meant it was perfect for me yesterday night to messily gobble down in ~10 minutes (good thing I was alone). Damned tasty going down, too. Word of caution - the Philly comes straight off the griddle and the fries seemingly straight out of the fryer - show restraint and patience, otherwise you'll end up burning up the insides of your own mouth! To state the obvious, can't eat like this regularly. But it's a perfect place when you need it.

I haven't been to Philly, but I'm glad they have a Philly Cheese Steak within driving distance. The thing to get is the WORKS Cheesesteak with Mushrooms, Grilled Onions and Hot Peppers. A Half Order will do justice, but if you're really hungry, you can get a Whole. GO EAGLES!

Bread was soft, the meat was tender and the mix of melted cheese and onions all together made it one of the best cheese steaks I've had outside of Philly. The sandwiches are HUGE, so I'd recommend splitting it or getting just a half for yourself.

I've never been to Philly and until a little over a month ago, I've never even had a cheese steak. So I'm by no means an expert in this sandwich but hot damn if John's didn't sent a high standard for my expectations. The Works here is awesome, especially with "hot" peppers added. Don't bother with fries or any sides cuz a half order is enough to stuff you. The garlic pepper sauce with a little bit of Louisiana hot pepper sauce poured over the sandwich gives it a nice kick. All the sandwiches are made to order and come out piping hot so grab a knife and fork or just blow real hard.

Yummy!! C'mon...if you see a picture of Mr.Kobe Bryant visiting this place himself (whose hometown is Philly), you know this place is legit. I got the works and the flavors were dynamite. Portions were huge for the price so it's well worth it. I also tried the pizza fries which were mediocre so minus one star for that. Extremely happy that this place is only a few blocks from my place! :)

The food here is SO GOOD. I order the cheese steak but with chicken instead and it is just delicious. The onion rings are a MUST.

WOW. CHEESESTEAK IS DELICIOUS* *I haven't really tried legitimate cheesesteak from Philly. So I guess technically I can't be the best judge, however, I've seen Kobe's picture at the John's Philly Grille on Beach (a Philly native) So I'm thinking good enough for him? Good enough for me! Soft Bread, TASTY steak. Nicely grilled peppers and onions (and mushrooms =] ). oo and CHEESE!!! Delicious!!!!!

Bomb cheese steaks and great service. Definitely will be regulars at this place. The atmosphere is pure Philly too, loved it.

OHMYGOD. ok, I am SUPER, annoyingly picky when it comes to the meat I eat, so when my boyfriend took me here for lunch one day I was really leary about how good this "cheesesteak sandwich" was gunna be. UM HELLOOOOOOOOOO! this is BY FAR the best sandwich Ive ever had. seriously. Its super good quality meat, love the peppers and the cheese...its the best. I cant even explain it, just believe me and go get one and you'll be hooked in no time. Swear.

I had The Works, and it was pretty awesome. Honestly it wasn't the best cheese-steak I've ever had, the meat was a little over cooked, and it was more greasy and less juicy, I don't know, I am sort of nit-picking because it was pretty damn good, and I will definitely go back, so really this was a win, just wasn't knocked out of the park. Definitely a good place to go, thanks Yelp!

I've never been to Philadelphia, nor do I have any desire to ever go. And If I ever did, it'd be to cut off Michael Vick's arms with my ginsu blade. I wouldn't tarnish my good katana with his blood. Ok, so..... Best Philly cheese steak sandwich for Valentine's Day dinner Eh-vehr! Nothing says romance quite like dripping goo ;-) Profuse with said goo of the cheese variety of course and loaded with meat and spicy peppers in a fluffy italian roll that has the crunchy exterior of a guido from Jersey Shore. This is now the go-to spot for cheese steak sammiches. The girly that works there is mad friendly. She let us come in and dine just before they were closing up. Her boyfriend came after closing hours and brought her some roses and a brown elephant balloon. I would never do such a thing. But I'm glad he did. Hopefully she forgot we were an inconvenience to her closing up shop duties. They probably did the forbidden dance when we left. I'm talking about the lambada of course. With a little bit of goo, I'm sure ;-)

My vice? Half of a #3 with onions, no peppers and of course an order of fries. It is pure, unadulterated gut-bomb heaven. Fresh bread that is crispy on the outside, light and fluffy inside piled high with beautiful strips of beef, sauteed mushrooms and onions and topped with ooey, gooey cheese. Mmmmmmm......cheese...... I'm not a fan of the steak fry, but I love them here at John's. They are cooked nice and crisp, which is what I like and what I think so many other steak fries are missing. Toss these little babies in some of John's seasoning and get ready to let loose...your belt buckle that is. But it's SO worth it. The onion rings are also amazing. Light and crispy and never greasy. The portion is huge as well, just like everything else here. Did I tell you they serve Tasty Cakes? Again, not a fan of the sweets but these bring me back to my childhood when my great-grandma would have a Tasty Cake waiting for me when I came home after school. Just the plain chocolate, no filling, no peanut butter, nothing fancy. When ever I see the rack full of these at John's I can't help but smile and think of her. And yes, I do partake on occasion. If for no other reason than to honor her memory. This place does me good all around. Except for the calories that is. Which is why my love affair with John's always must be fleeting and brief. But there is always another day. Until we meet again.

I had the works and I must say.. not bad at all! The sandwich was big, even if you order a half. Didn't try anything unfortunately but so far it ain't bad. Did not rate it a 5 star only because the sandwich could use some more flavor.

The bread fell apart when I was eating here. It was no longer a cheese steak because I had to eat it with a fork. It was more like a steak, bread and cheese salad. The place looked a bit dirty. It was ok, but there are better places out there like a bite of jersey.

THE BEST PHILLY CHEESE STEAK! :) I used to work next door to John's Philly Grille and it was torture at times. I could smell the sweet aroma from next door every morning. I have to say nothing compares to this place. The workers are so nice, they would deliver my food to me at times too! The fries were so good and I would always order them extra crispy! The portions were huge! I could never finish the small size. the WORKS was thee best with extra onions! Its always fresh and just the right amount of cheese on it. The atmosphere is nice as well, I would always pop in during football season to check the score (since my work didn't have tv). If you need something to hit the spot.. its here.. no where else compares!

Amazing sandwiches, great service. I would give this place a hard 5 stars. The philly cheese steak is by far the best I have ever had. Lot's of meat, all other added ingredients were amazing as well. Got the #6 John's special, and it was not one to let me down. I would recommend this to anyone reading this post. Check it out!

Been going to Johns since I was a kid on Beach Blvd, now on Goldenwest closer to my Moms.... Best food and awesome bread? The quality never falters, not a low cal meal...Nevertheless , if you are going to blow the diet this is the place!,,,,,

By far the best Philly Cheesesteak you can get in OC. This blows away Phillys Best like there is no tomorrow. I've never been to Philadelphia, and don't know how close it comes to being authentic, but who cares? It tastes great and is huge. I'm sold. I grew up in HB, and John's Philly Grille was a staple in High School and College. They have another location off PCH near Seal Beach which is equally good, but this is the one that was closest to me, and therefore the one I frequented the most. I still hit it up when in town. I usually get the works with extra mushrooms and cherry peppers. It is a little more expensive than the competition, but if you factor in the flavor (which is 10 times better) and the size (about 50% more), it is a much better value. Bring a friend or a hungry appetite, or be prepared for leftovers.

Cleanliness- This place reminds me of a pizzeria. Was clean enough to eat in, but the strip mall it's in is barren. Friendliness- The two guys working were nice and took our orders. Food- Philly Cheese Steaks are pretty much the same wherever you get them. We ordered the Works & John's Special and agreed that John's Special tasted better. Overall Value- The half sandwich was roughly 6 bucks and a whole sandwich was 9-10. The half sandwich was more than enough for one person. Pet Friendly- Didn't have outdoor tables but did have a bench we sat on to eat outside with my dog.

great little gym in the heart of Huntington Beach. Multiple locations. Cheese steaks are great, huge, and full of flavor. The fried zucchini is to die for and the steak fries are killer as well. Must try.

I have been to Philadelphia before, but, unfortunately, I did not get a cheesesteak there. I know, fail. Fortunately, the cheesesteaks here are super good! I don't know how they compare to the real thing, but the sandwiches here are awesome, in my opinion. I have only tried "The Works" and "The Godfather" and both are amazingly tasty. "The Works" has meat, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and cheese. "The Godfather" is more like a meatball sub, but with lots of onions. They are served piping hot, with juices and fillings falling everywhere. Use lots of napkins. Also, beware of the hot peppers. They are not so hot that you feel like your mouth is ripping apart, but they are still pretty spicy. Some people like the heat, but I find it quite distracting. It's hard to enjoy the sandwich when you're huffin' and puffin'. Restaurant is nice. There are plenty of seats and 2 TVs. Service is great. Prices are decent. For the sandwiches, there's the option of getting half or whole. If the real thing is this good, you can just skip the trip and head here. Save yourself some time and money.

I've been coming to John's Philly grill for about 3 years now and it's one of my favorite sandwich spots. I actually like it better than Big belly deli BUT thats apples and oranges :p I never had their Philly cheese steaks, but I've had the sandwiches and burgers. I always order a half size, Turkey sub, I like mine set up like this : Provolone, Lettuce,Tomato, Turkey, salt and pepper and always ask for oil and vinegar. Sometimes I like to add bacon. The tuna is awesome as well, as you know, you can't do just anyone's tuna or chicken salad . My mom gets Guido's favorite, I don't know whats in it but it is a favorite there... The burgers are yummmmmo and nice and juicy and very filling. I can do with just the burger a la carte, I don't need the fries, their very heavy. The potato and macaroni salad is good as well and im super picky about potato salad! I must try a philly cheesesteak sometime! But I get getting distracted by the super fresh sammies!!!!

I got take-out over lunch a week or two ago based on the recommendation of the Yelp reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. I got a large #4 (the Works), loaded with peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheese, and beef. My only gripe was that it could have used a little more meat, as a few bites were 90% veggies. I've (very sadly) never had a real Philly Cheese-steak, but this one did not disappoint. The bread was pretty chewy and crispy on the outside, despite the load of food it was cradling, which was impressive. I got a side of macaroni salad, which was sadly forgettable, but a nice effort nonetheless. My weak little stomach hated me with a passion later that day, but for the 30 mins of dining on the behemoth of a sandwich, my taste buds were happy. I'll likely return and expand my dining experience here, but for now, I enjoyed my meal and would recommend!

Went here with Clara K a few weeks ago. We split a full mushroom cheesesteak with diced hot peppers on the side and a order of cheese fries. This was the perfect amount of food for two people. The meat and onions were great but the bread was missing something. It was too good, too soft, too spongy. It needs a bit more bite to it like a true roll from Philly. I also ordered an orange creme soda which would have been great if it was more carbonated and colder. The cheese fries were steak fries with melted provolone on top. They also had seasoned salt. It was pretty good but I sort of wished for liquid cheese whiz. The service was good and the people were polite, but it took awhile to get our food. We enjoyed the meal but it certainly wasn't a 4.

When you first see John's, two possible thoughts come to mind. You see this old, neglected, run down strip mall, and think, this place could either be disgusting or one of the best Philly cheesesteaks outside of Philly. You can test this theory by assessing the restaurant's longevity, or you can try it. Go with option 2, the food is worth it. I can't judge the quality of the sandwich as an accurate representation of a Philly cheesesteak, because, well, I'm from California and I've never been to Philly. But what I can tell you is that the sandwiches are pretty good. A full size sandwich and fries can easily feed 2 people, maybe even 2 parents and a kid. They take a little time to make, but they're worth it. I used to drive from Irvine on my lunch break for these sandwiches. If you want to do the same, just call ahead when you leave and they'll have your sandwiches ready when you get there. The only downside is the price. Its a little on the pricey side, but the food is pretty damn good. My favorite is the philly with onions. Go get one now.

BEST HANGOVER CURE - #6 with everything. I don't know what it is about it but anytime I'm having a bad hangover day their cheesesteak gets me feeling all normal again. Thanks for that, John's. I love you and all your spicy meaty cheesy goodness.

Did I come to the wrong place?? That is exactly what I thought after eating here. I came here at the direction of the other Yelpers and their 5 star reviews and I felt led astray :( The sandwich was big, which was a plus. But unfortunately it was a big pile of tasteless nothing. It was alsmost as if they forgot to put the seasoning on it. Maybe I come on their off day, but I will never know if that's the exception or the rule, because I def won't be coming back here.

My ABSOLUTE favorite meal in HB. I've lived here my entire life and I've eaten almost everywhere in the city. But WOW, I crave a "regular" from John's all the time. Right up there next to handcrafted beers & amazing hot wings.

I had a bite of the Godfather sandwich and it was meaty. I'm sure this is a sandwich even Don Vito Corleone would enjoy. I'll have to order this next time. I actually ordered The Works cheese steak and it was tasty. The bread was fresh and not too thick. Veggies were grilled to perfection and the meat was also delicious. The Works sandwich was great and I look forward to trying some other sandwiches. The restaurant was pretty empty so that was nice since I phoned my order and wanted to get in and out. I highly recommend this place and I will return!

Def. a craveable place. Order The Works... worth all the calories! The bread def helps the texture of the sandwich.. stands up to the meat and cheese. Yum.. Is it lunch time yet?

I've been to Philly and had their cheesesteaks, which are out of this world. However, in So Cal this is probably the best cheesesteak sandwich available. I would recommend ordering a whole sandwich and one order of fries to share with another person. I personally love the regular cheesesteak or cheesesteak with mushrooms (both with peppers on the side).

I had been looking for a delicious cheese steak joint for a while then I read all the great reviews here so I decided to check John's out. Check it out for urself if u don't effing believe me!

The cheesesteak dive. Is it weird that a sandwich shop reminds me of my brother? He and I would go on the biggest missions after school. We would go to Comics Unlimited and spend like 3 hours in there reading comics then head over to John's where we would split the Godfather with extra everything, a massive plate of fries and so many Tasty Kakes we would be too sick to walk home. We would always have to call our mom to pick us up. We were gluttons back then, not much has changed. Except somehow that bastard is skinny. I'm convinced he sold his soul to the devil. Nowadays my favorite is #4 The Works, it comes with steak grilled among hot peppers, onions and mushrooms with lots of gooey cheese within a soft yet crisp french roll. It's incredibly messy and filling but if you can conquer this then you can accomplish anything. I don't really care for the water here it just sits all day long in a pitcher on the counter. I'm convinced they don't clean out the pitcher. I usually get the root beer. ****DISCLAIMER: I will admit that I haven't tried any other Philly cheesesteaks except for the ones here. Does that make me biased? Maybe. But why would I need to go anywhere else when Johns makes such a diet ruining worthy cheesesteak?****

REAL DOWN TO EARTH, HUMBLE, FRIENDLY, GREAT AUTHENTIC PHILLY style grub. I got a hoagie here and it was the real deal much like the ones Dr. Huckstable is obsessed about! It is old school and the complete opposite of glamorous but its all about the food and customer service here. They had some PIZZA FRIES on their menu and I'd like to try those next time!

I found this place because De Simone (same center) was closed & I was craving some sandwich nirvana. Thank goodness, I did. This place gives Philly a good name, unlike so many other wannabes. First off, it is kinda expensive, but it's gonna last you and keep you full for a while. $13 for a whole sandwich and fries; you're Joey Chestnut if you can finish it all. Half a sandwich is plenty; add a pound o'fries and you got a feast. Whole sandwich & fries: you can stop world hunger. DO NOT get the plain (meat & cheese) sandwich. Get at minimum the mushrooms with provolone. John's Special is the real deal & the way to go. He's the owner, go figure. I get it with no onions, but hey, no one is perfect. Don't forget the Philly Fries! Fries + seasoning salt = Awesome. Why more places don't break out the Lawry's, it's a mystery to me.

i'm not sure if they got new owners, but philly grille definitely isn't as good as it used to be. bums me out to say. the girl working at the register was definitely not a fan of customer service, didn't even acknowledge anyone that walked in. the pastrami is still delicious, but my husband got the cheese steak and said it was dry and could only really taste the onions. sometimes you just shouldn't mess with a good thing

It's the bread. It's all about the bread. This Cheese Steak Sandwich is absolutely delish. I've never been to Philadelphia, but after eating John's Philly cheese steak, I no longer need to. Gotta have them with those steak fries. Price is very reasonable especially for the size of the product. My wife and I usually share one sandwich and an order of fries. It seems to be plenty for us and it leaves a little room in my tummy to throw a couple of brews down while catching my Anaheim Angels.

came here for lunch with Dave K. today. we split a full size mushroom cheese steak with chopped up hot peppers on the side, plus an order of cheese fries. the cheese fries are seasoned steak fries with slices of melted provolone on top. the seasoning makes some of the bites a little too salty, but overall they were good. it took at least 15 minutes for our order to be ready, which i thought was slightly too long. i enjoyed the cheese steak here, but it was not as good as the ones i've had in philly. i think it comes down to the roll. while tasty and fresh, it was too soft and pillowy and didn't hold up well under the weight of the filling. it also is on the large side and got in the way when i tried to take a bite. i was also disappointed they were out of tastykakes. :( 3.5 stars

Since moving to the north side of huntinton I had to start frequenting this location, and with no regrets. This place holds to the philly grille awesomeness. The staff is friendly and always patient. The sandwiches are as always amazing. You have to order a full because half will leave you wanting more. Go with the original if you are a first timer and get the peppers and onions, yes it will be hot but it's just not the same without them.

It was Sunday night and we were feeling lazy for dinner and we had coupons for Quiznos. But serendipity struck because apparently Quiznos is closed on Sunday nights. I had always noticed Johns across the street and made mental notes to eat there some day but luckily 'some day' ended up being today. We ended up being the lucky eaters of absolutely SUBLIME Philly cheesesteaks sandwiches, gooey with fresh cheese and overloaded with rich thinly shaved steak, hot peppers and veggies and a buttery crunchy roll. This is what I imagine the real thing is like when you actually order it in Philly. So satisfying. So much more right than Quiznos will ever be. We also tried the pizza cheese fries which were steak fries with marinara sauce, Italian spices and melted cheese. A delicious twist on a classic chili cheese fry and hard to beat. Not only that, the John's special cheesesteaks I had, at a half size, was nearly 8 inches and my husbands green pepper cheesesteaks, a full size, was well over a foot long and was impossible to finish. Prices? Completely reasonable (about $5-$7 for half size) and $8.95 for full size. The fries (which took up an entire to-go box) were only $4.99. Best yet John himself served us and he was great. We got our food to go as the place is small and has more of an atmosphere for a casual lunch spot but we will definitely be back for some more of our new favorite east coast fix.

I've been eating the #3 (mushroom cheesesteak sandwich) for over a decade now. I've never ordered anything else, nor will this fact ever change. I know the cook by name, and he always knows what I like to order: #3, grilled onions with sweet peppers on the side, and an order of Philly fries (steak fries that are topped with seasoning salt) with EXTRA seasoning salt. Mmm. Something about the way the butcher paper is drenched in oil and cheese makes the sandwich taste so much better. The bread is always toasty and soft right when they bring it to your table, and the food is super hot, fresh from the grill! Just like it should be! This is also one of the only places I know of that still sell Snapple Apple. KUDOS! Make sure to try out the garlic sauce (the brownish sauce in their mini fridge)! The sandwich itself is tasty, but the garlic sauce completes the flavor! SOOOO GOOOD!!!! Enjoy!

Best philly cheesesteaks in the OC, maybe southern cali. i always keep an open mind about a new place if they sell a philly cheesesteak, ive tried dozens, and for years, nothing comes close. i always get a full works with everything along with their own rootbeer. cant get any better than that!

Best. Philly. Cheese steak. Evar. From north LA to south Orange County, this is where it's at. I would give this place 4 stars for always burning my mouth, but that's pretty much my own fault for not having the patience to wait for it to cool down first. The beef, the onions and peppers are all piled into the bun, piping hot. There's so much juicy goodness all jammed in there that you've gotta eat it quick before the bun sogs. Therein lies MY problem. I just haven't figured out the timing yet...

This place is going on my list of top 10. I tried John's Philly Grille last night for the 1st time and I absolutely love it! I ordered the mushroom cheesesteak for my daughter and I and it was HUGE. Lots of yummy goodness, plenty of tender meat and ooey gooey cheese along with mushrooms. The bread was slightly toasted on the outside and so warm and soft on the inside. We also had their seasoned steak fries..so crunchy, yet not oily and the perfect seasoned salt. The cashier behind the counter was so nice and sweet. Always smiling and he even came up to me and handed my to-go brown bag. EXCELLENT service. John if you're reading this, please give him a raise! I am not very often satisfied with customer service...but John's had the best service. NO COMPLAINTS!

Never had a Philly cheese steak sandwich before. Everytime people ask me about it, the first thing that pop in my head was "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" since that's when I first heard of it. Anyways, my husband decided to take me there earlier this week to try it because he goes there with his co-workers for lunch all the time and they loved it. Everything smells great and when I took my first bite...it was like FOOD HEAVEN. John's Philly Grille really hit the spot. I am now a fan! A+

I've been coming here since I was a kid and I don't think I'll ever get tired of this place. No other cheesesteak sandwich with mushrooms and french fries will ever compare. As my boyfriend said after taking him there for the first time, "I want to live in this (takeout) bag!"

I've never been to Philadelphia so I'm not sure exactly what an authentic cheese steak should taste like, but I love the sandwiches here. Yummy, large sandwiches stuffed full of steak, provolone cheese, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. The godfather sandwich is also excellent. Veal parmigiana sandwich is ok. Fries are wide steak fries, but they are salty as hell. Definitely good eats here.

I live right around the corner from John's Philly Grille, and I consider going here part of my regular meal plan. Of all the restaurants I frequent, this one gives me the most warm fuzzies, by far. Its just a little hole in the wall, but you always know exactly what to expect when you order. And the staff are just the kind of kids you want to put dollars in the tip jar for.

I went to this place excited to taste the food and share my opinion about this restaurant, but to my displeasure they closed earlier than the time they advertised. I literally was there at 815pm and they waved me goodbye saying they were closed.. I guess they didn't care for it's customers and decided that leaving early was the best thing for business.

Have you ever had one of those days where you're hungry, but can't figure out what you want? You look through the fridge and nothing grabs you, or maybe you just don't feel like cooking. Pizza or burgers just aren't going to cut it and you don't want to wait 45 minutes for a table at Choke-n-Puke#265, only to endure what feels like hours of overly energetic servers, decked in flair, pouring their sugary sweetness all over you as they sing a copyright-safe birthday song to someone at another table. You don't want to try some place new, because that often winds up in disappointment. You want a quality meal, at a good price; that's quick, easy and always tastes great. You want to go some place where you know you'll get exactly what you're looking for, no matter what- a "go-to" place. John's Philly Grill is that place for us. My wife and I always find ourselves there when we can't think of where to go. It's also the only place we bring out of town visitors, because we know they won't be disappointed. John's Philly Grill considers itself the Home of the Original Cheesesteak & Hoagie and Broad Street Bully Burger. While I've never had their burger, I can vouch for the cheesesteaks and hoagies. The menu also includes hot appetizers, giant salads and deli-style sandwiches. John offers 6 types of cheesesteak, but I always go for the classic Number One, whole, with grilled onions and no peppers. My wife gets the whole Number 3 (which is the same as mine, but with mushrooms). Some of the other popular hot sandwiches are "The Godfather" (homemade meatball and Italian sausage), Bar-B-Que Beef, Chicken and Veal Parmesan and the Green Pepper & Egg (a South Philly favorite). Once, I tried the grilled chicken sandwich and it was just as good as the cheesesteak. The cold hoagies have names like "Guido's Favorite", which if you know anyone named Guido, you're gonna like it, if you know what I mean. People we've brought there have often ordered different things and always had good things to say; therefore I have no doubt that the entire menu is authentic and delicious. John will personally handle any catered affair from 'soup to nuts'. You provide the place, he'll provide the food, the tables, chairs, tablecloths, plates, napkins and party supplies; complete with delivery and setup. You can choose from party trays, hot entrees, wing platters of up to 100 pieces, giant party subs that feed up to 25 people and individual box lunches, perfect for an office meeting. He'll even provide you with all of the supplies you need for a do-it-yourself catered meal. Read the full review at: Fat People Know How to Eat dot com

I hope your hungry, this place LOADS the food on your plate.. it's right up there with Franks in costa mesa for the best cheesesteaks i've found in Orange County so far. One tip, order your sandwhich with extra cheese... makes it so much better. Oh, and their fries are bomb too... but bring a friend to help you eat them all.

Excellent, something you don't see much around O.C. Friendly service too. You get a lot of food and good choices.

Solid 4 Stars. All their sammiches are fresh and made to order. Yes, if you are wanting a quick bite, you might wait a bit longer. But its worth the wait and then some. Their philly steak slices are tender and moist. Not over-cooked and very soft. Cheese is gooey and fresh. I like their John's Special cuz it comes w/ lettuce and tomatoes - makes you feel like its healthy. But it's a mouthful. I like things kicked up a notch so i always get mine w/ jalapenos. The Godfather is a sammich w. homemade meatballs and italian sausage. Throw in some homemade sauce w/ peppers and onions and the provolone, you have a meal you need to eat w/ a fork and knife.

I only come here for one type of sandwich because it's the best around here and it is the pastrami sandwich. This sandwich is so yummy! The peppers and onions on it are what really make it so good. My only complaint here is that the bread always seems to be a little to tough/flaky instead of being soft. Still, I recommend you check out this place cause they've always gotten it right when I go.

Had some time to kill and was in the area, so I decided to stop by this place after a quick search on the Yelp mobile app. I love Philly Cheesesteaks and have been frequenting Philly's Best ever since it opened up in OC several years ago. John's is located in a large shopping plaza, plenty of parking. I went during the twilight zone hours between lunch and dinner, so there was only two other tables filled. Ordered a large cheesesteak with extra onions (around 9 dollars), fries, and a drink. I think my total was around 14 dollars. Little expensive for a cheesesteak. I really liked how the peppers were chopped up and added to the meat. This made every bite explode with delicious flavor. Unfortunately, the skin on the roof of my mouth exploded as well from the searing hot temperature of the meat. I am all for freshly cooked fare, but there is a thin line between piping hot and injury inducing hot. If you order a sandwich here, make sure to give it a couple of minutes to cool down. There wasn't as much cheese as I would have liked, but the sandwich was tasty nonetheless and the large sandwich was huge. Fries had the seasoning on it reminiscent of Lawry's salt, and you get a huge portion of fries too. The meal satisfied my hunger and some parts of it were memorable, but I don't think I will be frequenting this place very often. For about five bucks less I can enjoy the same meal (with the addition of cheese for the fries) over at Philly's Best. In my opinion, the Amoroso rolls at PB are the best in the biz. I did notice the picture of Kobe, guess ballhogs have to eat too.

Great place but I think it should be $$. Cost 40 dollars for the three of us, drinks, zucchini, and three sandwiches. But you can take half a sandwich home cause they are phylling. :P

My co-worker and I usually split one of these cheesy delights for lunch and I have to say that it has always been a really fresh sandwich. The bread is never stale or hard to eat. I usually have a coupon for this sandwich in the entertainment book so that makes the sandwich about the right price. Getting the sandwich and fries (fries are ala cart) is a bit expensive but you get alot, so I suggest sharing it with a friend. All-in-all, not a bad lunch place.

Order the Works Cheese Steak and you will be in heaven. They need new carpet but that's about only complaint I have.

After a very long break from this place, I came back to check it out again. Still the same and actually got a little better! There's a new cashier working there and she is the most friendly and coolest person ever! The food still kicks ass! And the vibe of the place is still really chill.

Well it was 8 o'clock and was craving some philly love so i decided to check this place out. It was kinda hard to find but found it at the corner. I got the number 1 and it came out to like 9 bucks which is way more expensive then the other john philly grille on beach . Probable b/c its Huntington Beach they can charge alot for a sandwhich. If it was like a dollar or two cheaper i would totally hit this place up more before playing basketball but hey times are tough...

Wow.. the best cheese steaks I can find locally. I've heard everything on the menu is delicious but I cant pull myself away from ordering the large #1. The fried zucchini I never thought I'd even be interested in but it is so perfect with the sandwich. They don't do well here with take out orders (the one on BEACH takes your order and won't even make it til you get there) so expect to wait 10-15 but pull up a free OC Weekly or something around there and it's definitely worth the wait.

I been a big fan of John's Philly Grille and we found this place when my dad loved to go on these food binges after one of our cross country meets and wanted to use the Entertainment Book. Anyways we decided to give this place a try. The sandwiches are great and juicy and yum yum yum. I usually get the John's special and even though it is $8.00, it is sure worth the money. I have not bumped into any better Philly sandwich.

I have been hooked on this place for 5 years now. Seriously good food. This place is the best cheesesteak place you can find in Cali. Before we lived in HB we would make special trip from Fullerton just for John's, that's how good it is! I love the Johns special, my boyfriend gets the godfather and we share the chili cheese fries, yummmy! It makes my mouth water. We recently catered our fight night party with Johns and it was a huge hit. It was a pretty good price and a ton of food and leftovers. Score! FYI there is a little bit of a wait but they cook everything fresh so it's worth it.

This is a five star review. John's is not a five star fancy-schmancy deluxe dining experience, but for what it is, it is as good as it gets, which fits the five star guidelines here. My star rating here is like my movie ratings. I don't rate science fiction against, say Becket. I rate it among other films of the same genre. The same for restaurants. Capisci? When in Philly, I have eaten at whatever place is well-recommended, either nationally or lacally. They have all been good, and, of course are all authentic, since they are established Philly joints with a local following. They are all a little different, too. Having said all of that, which amounts to almost nothing, I must say that this is the best Philly cheesesteak joint we have found in el lay and orange county. Sadly, we haven't found a decent one in el lay county, so have to drive clear down to Johns. I almost make up excuses to run an errand that will take me by them. Fortunately, they are close to the freeway. I asked a Philly guy what was good out here, and he named several, apologizing for the distance I would have to drive. We tried them all, and our preference soon became John's. A couple of other Philly Pholks confirmed this, as did the Philly Pholks we have taken there. Some get a little hissy about the cheese, but, heck, even in Philly, they have different opinions on cheese. My favorite is the works, with about everything. I put a little mayo on it, too. Just a little. My normal practice is to use my pocket knife to reduce the amount of bread I am consuming in a sandwich, as I must watch my carbs. The bread here tastes straight from Philly, so I don't trim much off. And it is ever so slightly toasted before serving. They got it right here. I just finished mine, and my hands smell so good, I don't wanna wash them until I have to. Oh, yeah, they have Tastycakes, too. Even the chocolate peanut butter ones at times. They have beer, but don't think they have wine. Why on earth would they, anyway? BTW, the one down on Beach blvd is about as good, but is outside, under canvas, so choose your weather.

This is hands down the best Philly cheesesteak sandwich place I've ever been to. I don't go to any other place. I'm only in the vicinity once a week, but I'd rather wait a whole week to eat here then actually get it elsewhere. I know this place is not in Philly, but it's GOOD! Make sure you get it with pepper & onions.

wow.. i been wanting to try this place for sometime now..i've had better from the steak sandwich palce in the mall.. customer service was terrible.. took forever to get our food, we were ready to go cancel our order, for one large snawich, fries, and a large drink was $16! 3 of us shared it, but we wish we could've just asked for a refund. cool decor.. and they make their own bottle sodas, but, i will never eat here again.

I have been coming here since before John bought the place. He has made it even better. This is far and away the best food I have ever had. If I'm ever on death row this will be my last meal. Cheese Steak with ketchup, pickle, onion and hot pepper. Thank you John for keeping the dream alive. The food is incredible.

Sandwiches are crazy good. Be careful if you get a philly because if you dig right in you'll burn your mouth. The only downside is when you leave you smell like you were the one doing the cooking and the lady that works the counter has bad teeth. Oh yeah she was kind of a beyotch too.
